Barbara Bergsten
I create mixed-media paintings on canvas. My process starts with playing with a wide array materials. Using acrylic paints, mediums and inks as well as any stuff I can adhere to the canvas, making a structure built layer by layer. The goal is to have a “sandwich” not a “tapenade” where bits and pieces of each process are visible. I constantly try new techniques. Starting with a strong canvas foundation and good craft I continue to build each layer. Pushing and pulling different portions of the canvas physically and visually gives the piece organization and creates visual hierarchy. Color and pattern dominate my works. I employ recurring themes of flowers, geometric shapes, paths and “piecing together”. The surface treatment is an important part of my work. I am constantly learning and practicing, driven to create, conceal and then reveal again.
