Enjoy

My studio

The world is a very different place than it was last Sunday when I wrote a week’s worth of intentions. I thought Sunday Enjoy would be a light, kind of kick back post. Now everything is upside down. I’m so grateful to have a beautiful art studio in my home with every supply I would possibly want. I am going to Enjoy this special spot. Please find a special spot to enjoy too. Thinking BEST THOUGHTS for all!

Explore

brush strokes!

In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870-1940

Today my intention was to explore. What better place to explore than a museum. The vast array of types of brush strokes in this collection is amazing. I’m going to reference this visual vocabulary often!

Dream

… a cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.”I fulfilled a childhood dream when I became artist” Similar: ambition, aspiration, goal, design … contemplate the possibility of doing something …

How lucky am I am! In all this craziness that is surrounding us I’m able to pick up a paint brush and dream. I am so grateful.

Create

possibilities

Today my intention was create. I had a stack of discouraging canvases. I was thinking, which one should I work on and didn’t have any spark of inspiration. Then I thought take all my discouraging, uninspiring canvases back to white! With some gesso, block out white and molding paste I created walls of possibilities!

Relax

It’s just paint!

Just paint

My intention for today is relax. This is a difficult one for me. I get very caught up in “rules”, “what I’ve learned”, “how things should go”, “push/pull”, “warm vs cool”, you get what I’m saying! That I don’t play very well. I never get to the happy accident stage. Today I’m just messing around with paint! Because after all it’s just paint – wonderful, pretty, gooey paint!

Learn

#todayatapple

Today my intention was to learn something new. Monday mornings I fill out my Self Planner. This week I started adding an intention for each day. I’m taking two classes at my local Apple Store. Learning some interesting stuff and can’t wait to use it! #todayatapple

Commitment

Midterm Critique 3/4/20

I have clearly had a problem committing to writing often. This is something I want to do so why am I stopped? That is a question for another day. I’m going to try microblogging for a bit and see if that helps. It’s Spring Break from school, Spring Forward with time so I’m going to Spring into microblogging. Last Wednesday we had our midterm critique.

Pattern Fields

close up of Orchids without pattern/with pattern

I just read about a technique I’d like to try in Nancy Reyner’s book Acrylic Innovation. She calls it “Pattern Fields” pg. 96.  I’m naturally drawn to pattern. I think I’ve been consciously avoiding it, assuming it was “crafty, wallpaperish, gimmicky” even though it’s one of the principles of design. I’m embracing my inter-pattern love!

Here’s some tips I’ll keep in mind to incorporate pattern in my next piece.

  1. organize patterns in asymmetrical areas
  2. use spatial effects (i.e. overlap, size and scale) to create the illusion of depth
  3. contrast (i.e. color, texture, opacity, solid vs patterned areas)
  4. vary the repetition

Inspiration

What contemporary painters do you admire? Why?

This is one of the questions we are asked to answer for our Painting II Outline class assignment. Over the semesters I’ve added to my list as I learn about new (to me) contemporary artists. At my teacher’s suggestion I‘ve added Shinique Smith. She creates highly expressive paintings combining paint, collage and assemblage. She is a great inspiration to break the picture plane and go all out with color and ideas. I’m excited to explore this method with my newest piece “recovery is a journey not a destination”. Lets’s see where this takes me!
